Doomsday has been cancelled!

2000     2012     2XYZ

There has been no shortage of doomsayers who predicted apocalyptic events close to the end of the millennium or in the year 2012.

First the non-event of 2000

Nostradamus in Century 10 Quatrain 72:
L'an mil neuf cens nonante neuf sept mois,
Du ciel viendra un grand Roi deffraieur.
Resusciter le grand Roi d'Angolmois.
Avant que Mars regner par bon heur.

Translated into English it reads approximately:
In the year 1999 and seven months
a great king of terror will come from the sky.
He will resuscitate the great king of Angolmois.
Before and after Mars reigns happily.
Surprisingly this has been interpreted as a doomsday prediction! It hasn't happened as foretold. So it's just another failed Nostradamus prophecy.

Edgar Cayce - the "Sleeping Prophet"
Foresaw a total change of the North American coastline, the Japanese islands, and northern Europe by the year 1999 (or 2000 according to other sources). He also predicted the rise of the "sunken continent" Atlantis. Other earth-changes include the tilting of earth's axis with associated far-reaching climate changes.

This hasn't happened either. For anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of physics, the tilting of earth's axis is simply an impossibility. The physical forces to achieve that would by far exceed anything imaginable including the impact of a very large asteroid. It seems Cayce hadn't considered, that his visions could be symbolic. If you would say, that the earth's "Axis" has shifted from Berlin-Rome-Tokyo in the early 1940s to Washington-London-Moscow in the mid to late 90s, nobody would object. And certainly the political climate has changed dramatically in the last 60 years. With "Atlantis" one would associate mainly scientific development, and dramatic advancements in electronics and biotechnology have indeed taken place.

Paul Solomon
Is a rich source of pompous doom- and gloom-prophecy. Just one example: He prophesied in Reading No. 1466 (21/1/1991) that World War III would end on the 5th of May 2000. Of course it would be fought with nuclear, chemical and biological weaponry. However elsewhere in his readings Solomon states, that prophecies are warnings only, and can be averted if you heed the signs!

As you can see now, WW III did not happen. Another failed reading, like all the others.

Jehovah's Witnesses
Could calculate the "beginning of the end-times" as the year 1914. Supposedly the Second Coming of Jesus Christ was to happen "within one generation" after that. This of course would include the "times of tribulation" and the battle of Armageddon, according to the book of Revelation in the Bible.

Well, even if you are generous, and give "a generation" 80 years, the time for doomsday has expired in 1994. In the meantime the sect has adopted a more cautious approach to their calculations...

Y2K
The pessimists amongst computer scientists predicted anything up to a nuclear exchange and/or the total collapse of world-economy as a result of the so called Millennium-Bug, that was not only supposed to hit mainframe computers, but also PCs and microchips. A huge effort was made worldwide to fix any Y2K problems beforehand.

Now that the year 2000 has come and gone, you see for yourself, that not much has gone wrong, except the odd old application! And all the nukes of the superpowers have stayed safely in their silos!

Now to the non-event of December the 21st 2012

More recently people had concentrated on the 21/12/2012 - the end of an epoch in an old Mayan calendar as the new doomsday date, since 2000/2001 had so obviously been a non-event. Whole new 2012 sites had sprung up. For instance 2012 Links or 2012: Dire Gnosis contain a collection of links to sites containing:
It all looks like the "New Age" version of the mainly Christian-based year 2000/2001 doomsday prophecies, and as the former so has this prophecy failed.

To restore sanity to the whole matter

1. Spirit-messages to various mediums just before the turn of the millennium did not indicate any doomsday events at the turn of the millenium or in the near future afterwards.

Dawn Hill, the famous Tasmanian Spiritualist asked her control-spirit "David" about the prophesied cataclysmic earth changes. David put these into the very distant future. David also stressed, that each one of us creates reality by the thoughts we entertain. This we do either as an individual, or as a group. This puts the responsibility back to each and every one of us - "As you think, so shall you be".

All readings given at the Canberra Spiritualist Association during 1998 and 1999 had indicated a smooth transition to the year 2000. No major disruptions were foreseen by any medium! This has now been vindicated. Just on the 24th of October 2000 Norman Ivory's spirit-guide Sun Tsen (Norman is a trance-medium) set out, why there won't be any doomsday events in the foreseeable future: The earth is still needed as a place where spirits can incarnate, and have an experience in the material world. However just because this is so, one cannot expect "smooth sailing", just the opposite! Since earth is some kind of testing-ground, there will be real tests, i.e. difficulties, albeit no terminal ones, so no doomsday.

2. Predictions by other prophets - or even the same as before - concern times far later than the turn of the millennium.

Andrew Fitzherbert, the Australian psychic, who predicted the fall of the Berlin Wall, makes in his book "Psychic Sense" predictions far into the 21st century. He also stresses, that the future is not fixed, and is subject to our own free will, so that he can predict the most likely future only.

Edgar Cayce spoke about being re-incarnated around the year 2,100.

Silver Birch, the spirit guide of Maurice Barbanell speaks of a coming age of peace and harmony.

Many of Paul Solomon's readings speak of a "New heaven and new earth", that will come about either with the co-operation of man, or against his will, again the choice being with the individual.

Sun Tsen, Norman Ivory's spirit guide speaks in his year 2000 Christmas message of spiritual developments in the world during the 21st century in particular and in the next 8,000 to 10,000 years in general. Read the whole message.
Nine years later - on the 13th of August 2009 Norman Ivory's other guide Teh expands on the same theme.

3. For unshakable Bible believers: The Bible states, that a doomsday date cannot be calculated.

According to Matthew 24 (V.36 onwards) only God, but not even Jesus knows the date and time of the apocalypse. This theme is the subject of a few parables, continuing to Matthew 25. Disregarding the question of the authority of the Bible for a moment, the whole passage also begs the question, if it was meant to be interpreted as literally happening in the material world. For instance according to Swedenborg all these things have already taken place in the spiritual world.

The real challenges facing us

By the looks of it, doomsday has been and will be a non-event. It is however inevitable, that change will take place. Climate change, Peak Oil and other environmental influences will take care of that. Our current pre-occupation with consumption and economic growth is also obviously unsustainable. The following site shows that in an entertaining but deadly serious manner:

      The Story of Stuff

Current social structures are under increasing stress too. Look for instance at

      Robert Theobald's Ideas

As presented on Radio National's "The Healing Century". Far from being fatalistic, the late Robert Theobald looked to the future, and wanted to do something to change it in a positive way.

There is also a spiritual change "in the air", a realisation that man is not just a physical body, but a spirit, that has a body. Once this has been established as common knowledge - in spite of many closed minded sceptics kicking and screaming, and possibly even committing suicide - the golden age can begin. An example of a sustainable society based on practical co-operation between the spirit world and the natural world is

      The Findhorn Project

But before you sit back with a sigh of relief, remember that within the next 100 years every single one reading this will have encountered their own personal "Doomsday", namely the transition to the spirit world, also called death of the body. So why not inform yourself about what's in store on that level of existence? For instance have a look at David Fontana's "Life Beyond Death". He is not aligned with any religious group, it's just an un-biased investigation. The referemce section at the end of the book shows how much research has already been done on this subject!
